A growing group of skeptics say Venoco’s experience illustrates how investors are getting skittish with Monterey Shale.

That creates doubts about the California’s shale dreams.

“This is a flash in the pan,” said Post Carbon Institute fellow Richard Heinberg, author of the book Snake Oil.

He warned that pouring resources into shale gas and oil is “sucking all the oxygen out of the room in terms of available energy investment capital.”

That’s because tapping shale is incredibly expensive, according to Deborah Rogers, Energy Policy Forum director and former investment banker.
