  11. New at Post Carbon Books

Hello

We were pleased to announce this month that we have developed a members program
for Post Carbon Institute and Global Public Media. Thank you to all those new
members who have joined us and we invite others to join.
We have a lot going on over the summer.  Dave
and I will be at Solfest, at the Solar Living Institute in HoplandCalifornia
(http://solarliving.org/solfest2004.cfm),
come and see us if you are in the area. We have begun planning for a North American
Peak Oil and Gas conference. Let us know if you are interested in volunteering,
participating or donating to the project. We will keep everyone informed as
we solidify the details. I am now doing a blog in conjunction with Chelsea Green
books. I hope you will find it stimulating. I am currently at a local money
conference giving a presentation with Richard Douthwaite. More on the conference
when I return (http://www.localcurrency.org/).
After a lot of hard work and anticipation
High Noon for Natural Gas is finally on its way to the printers and will be
coming out in July. I will be doing a book tour. Please let us know if you have
location and host suggestions, especially independent book sellers. We appreciate
the tremendous interest in Post Carbon Outpost Guidebook and we will let you
know as soon as version 1 is available.

Yours,
Julian Darley

1. High Noon for Natural Gas

In July 2004, Chelsea Green Publishing will release the much anticipated book - High Noon for Natural Gas: The New Energy Crisis.

Purchase High Noon or donate to get a signed copy:
https://store.postcarbon.org/

Written by Julian Darley, director of the Post Carbon Institute and expert on oil and gas peak, this book is a comprehensive analysis, and timely expose, which reveals the truth about the many dangers we will face as we rely more heavily on natural gas to fuel the industrial world. Drawing on his expertise, Darley gives the first authoritative account of how the coming natural gas shortage in the United States and Canada will try the energy and economic systems of both countries beyond their limits.

"The United States will find the world of liquefied natural gas (LNG) potentially much more troubling than that of oil. To the extent that the so-called 'war on terror' is a cover for increasingly desperate moves to control the world's dwindling oil supply, expansion into LNG (with its main production sources in politically anti-American states) threatens an even greater likelihood of endless war, covert disruption and forced regime change." --from High Noon for Natural Gas

"Julian Darley has done far more than just research the facts; he understands the big picture and helps readers see how our lives and our world are being imperiled because of our increasing dependence on this powerful but invisible substance." --Richard Heinberg, author of The Party's Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrialized Societies

5 . North American Peak Oil and Gas Conference

Don't fret if you missed the ASPO 2004 - Post Carbon Institute is in the planning stages of the first annual North American Peak Oil and Gas conference that will focus not only the problem but what we can do about it collectively and in our communities. Contact us if you would like to donate funds to make it happen. Stay tuned for details.

6 . Raise Energy Awareness Campaign

Dave is leading our Raise Energy Awareness campaign to work with community organizations and concerned citizens to organize screenings of The End of Suburbia throughout the world. Ten screenings will occur in June and over 50 are in the planning stages in Ireland, England, Portugal, Germany, Canada, and all over the United States. Julian says "By being engaging, indeed amusing in places, The END of SUBURBIA will help to bring oil peak to a much wider public". You have got to see it.

If you feel energized by the possibilities for raising awareness with a professionally produced film about Peak Oil and Gas, we invite  your participation as a host, helper, or "local expert" to lead the discussion after the film.

7 . Outpost Guidebook

We are in the finshing stage of a guidebook for starting an Outpost or interest group to reduce their community's reliance on fossil fuels. We have produced a short guidebook for making the most of the Oil Awareness Meetups, so they actually lead to people getting active as opposed to lamenting over a beer. We encourage you to go to the meetups and engage the people that show up.

8. Global Relocalization

We have drafted a statement on Global Relocalization, a key building block for the transition into the Post Carbon Age. We would like your comments. We are also forming a coalition called The Global Alliance for Relocalization that will include social justice and environmental groups and host conference on Global Relocalization next year.

Please let us know what you think about Global Relocalization:

9. Join the 400+ people who signed the Oil Peak and Decline declaration

The COPAD declaration on Oil Peak and Decline now has over 400 signatories. Colin Campbell included it verbatim in the latest ASPO newsletter (June). With your membership, you can optionally become a signatory or go to the copad site. If you have not already, we urge you to sign the COPAD declaration on Oil Peak and Decline and tell your friends.

The Post Carbon Institute encourages the following courses of action:

  • Begin building Parallel Public Infrastructure (we are working on research
    and guidelines)
  • Write letters to the editor of your newspapers and to your local politicians--
    (mention Peak Oil and Gas)
  • Tell your friends and neighbors what's happening
  • Start a Post
    Carbon Outpost
  • Forward this newsletter to others
  • Support our efforts by becoming a member

The Post Carbon Institute newsletter is designed
to inform you of the work of the Institute, which is to help educate
and prepare communities for a world of declining oil production. For
North Americans and those in the British Isles and New Zealand, peak
oil is compounded by heavy dependence on now declining natural gas production.

Help us get this message out to the rest of the world -- please forward
this email and encourage your friends, family members, co-workers, planners,
policy makers, and politicians to subscribe.
